Thesis Proposal

Okay, how about you have the opportunity to do a thesis, one year long, on any subject you like related to design (more specifically interaction design). The sky is the limit! What would you do? This seems like an easy question, right? Thing is, I am currently in that exact same position. My brain is currently in creative overdrive.

I have a few ideas, ranging from more traditional product design to interface design. Areas such as tangible media, communities, user interfaces and more. Before giving my thoughts away, what if you were given the chance to do a 1 year research project? What would you do? What interests you? What topics are relevant in interaction design? Note: obviously, avoid giving away your 1 million dollar design idea, think more in terms of inspiration and broader topics.

Wallpaper* Magazine

If you get a chance, why not buy the latest Wallpaper* magazine (October 2005 issue), yours truly is featured. Funny thing is, I have not even seen it myself. Yay hooray for international delays.

Well given the current state of things, I would personally write about how Microsoft interacts with Apple’s design :P

But, in seriousness I would finally get my ass to write thesis (a book in my case, a long one) that I have been tinkering with which is entitled “Interface vs. Interference.”

Don’t use my title. Basically what it is about is when a user interface is so blatantly over designed that it is no longer an interface, but rather an interference that stifles the user from completing the task that they are trying to accomplish as opposed to aiding them in doing so.

I don’t know; that is most likely a horrible idea but I thought I would just give my 3 cents (yes, my 2 cents is worth an extra).

Didier, why not redesign something that always bothered you. If I were you, I’d go for ergonomics, for example: athletic equiment or cars. It’s already in your nature, isn’t it?

I would look for a trend comparison: hint* Philips is chasing it’s “sense and simplicity” campaign by reducing the amount of buttons available to users in their products.

” Which precedents or circumstances (social anthropology) need to be present for a super simple design to become a breakthrough”

Is the iPod really a breakthrough or are there are factors that can identify a prelude for a created need for simple design?

What were the social indicators that lead to super hightech, ultra-configurable anyway?

How about documenting interactive designs? How do you document an Ajax application? Wireframes aren’t enough for a full specification, you can’t ignore browser controls anymore if your implementation breaks them. What’s new since interactive video-discs?

Boring stuff, I know, but boy do we need it!

I would probably do something related to transportation or city planning, as I see oil dependency as perhaps the largest problem in the world right now that could perhaps be solved with some ingenuity. It’s probably going to be on our generation’s shoulders to solve this problem, oil production world wide is supposed to peak and be on a downward slide starting in about 5 years — pretty scary!

I just got my Oct Wallpaper and was flipping through when I came across the full spread of you and Nic. Unfortunately they didn’t get your name right - they credited Nic Zambetti and James Tichenor. Sorry, man…

This is probably the wrong place to tell you but the links to ‘bookmarks’ and ‘essentials’ have not been added to the menu that appears off the frontpage. :) wicked site tho!
