I Hate iChat
See, I hate it so much that I decided to start blogging again. So, okay, maybe not. I must admit, the title is a rather bold statement. How can I possibly hate an application I use daily? Of course, this is not about the interface or the sexyness of the icons (by the way, Apple dropped the AIM part of the logo in their latest version, shipped with Tiger). Nope. This is about the social implications of instant messaging.
Uhm, dude, where have you been?
First things first, it has been rather quiet here at the nundroo headquarters. I keep saying it: blogging takes time! Why do you think so many people are going full time with this? Money? Yeah, right. No. Ego? Perhaps. Anyway, I am no Jason Kottke and there is no way yet I will dedicate myself full time to blogging. No, this year I have been incredibly busy doing all sorts of things related to design, from interface design to product design. For a quick overview, take a look at my recently launched portfolio site, it is far from complete, but will give you an idea (note: it has not been tested in internet explorer on windows, so do not complain, or get a decent browser, or just buy an Apple).

Okay, now that that is out of the way, let us get back to the essence here. Why do I hate iChat? Instant messaging kills existing social networks, it makes people lazy, it is addictive, it creates a fake sense of community, it absolutely, positively kills productivity and worst of all, it becomes the new standard for communication. Why is it that people living in the same building would rather want to use iChat to communicate (Rendez-vous, Bonjour, or whatever daft french name it has been given these days) than physical contact. You know, that thing called face-to-face conversation. What is wrong with a glass of wine and a good debate? Are we scared of looking each other in the eyes? Have we lost the sense of physical communication? Do we need to hide behind a laptop screen and a keyboard?
From Google to Southpark
This morning I opened another application I hate (but of course use daily), my RSS feed reader. Great. I am ranting about instant messaging and what happens? Big mighty Google decides to throw its weight around and released Google Talk (great job on the name guys, I am impressed, not. Jesus... Same goes for the logo, or the whole interface for that matter. And where's the Mac OS version?). To make sure no one is left out in the instant messaging business everyone and their grandmother is offering chat applications. So what next? If I want to date a girl I will have to chat with her first (some of course will argue that that is the only way nowadays, well, as Cartman from Southpark would say: "Screw you guys, I'm going home!").

See, I love technology, do not get me wrong. I use it daily, and my professional life mainly revolves around technology. But to be honest the whole social software crap is getting to a point where I believe we are creating something horrible. Honestly, before a baby can talk it will instant message his or her mom asking for milk (not from the breast of course, that may be dangerous...). Are we insane? And I have not even started talking about social networks like Orkut, Friendster or the newly hyped BuddyTown. A few weeks ago I got an email asking me if I would be interested in joining a network of people with the first name "Didier" in The Netherlands. I kid you not. Seriously people, what is up with you? Is your life so daft that you need to create a group that shares the same first name in a specific country. One word: pathetic. Besides, I live in Italy now (do not event think about sending me another request!).
People hide behind their computer. Nothing new, really. Back in the days when I was using IRC (yes, I know...) it was no different, but at least a majority was just geeky. Nowadays even Joe from across the street is chatting; probably to underaged girls. My point being that iChat is like cigarettes. Bored? Light one up, or rather, ping somebody to start a completely useless conversation. Only difference being, iChat allegedly does not harm your health, although I would like to make a case for the contrary. Another thing I hate iChat for is misunderstandings. I think I have insulted half the world through instant messaging without even wanting to (some may say that is not such a bad thing after all). Furthermore, there are no facial expressions in iChat, and do not tell me smilies are, that is lame.
iChat, iGood?
"Hey dude, if you think iChat is lame, stop using it!". Good point. I think iChat is great when it reinforces existing physical social networks. Sometimes it's just easier to ping someone. But it should never serve as a replacement. You can not hug someone over iChat (trust me, I tried, and an iBook is not really great for hugging...). Another thing iChat is great for is keeping in touch with those that live across the planet. Keeping contact with people state-side in my case, for example. So, no, iChat is not all evil, but I think there is a challenge in leveraging the always-on aspect of instant messaging. We all know away messages are useless, ping here, ping there and before you know it you killed 4 hours talking about the latest Apple mouse or why having clients sucks (great article by the way, and congratulations to the team on a great ALA relaunch. Jason, good design job, as usual!).

Have you ever read anything by Neil Postman? I think you would find his analysis of social relations and the influence of technology fascinating and insightful. See his books Technopoly and Amusing Ourselves to Death especially.

It goes both ways… you can see this as an opportunity to really keep in touch with only the people you really want, while at the same time you can deal with all those annoying people you’d rather not via iChat or YM! or whatever you use.
Keep your friends closer and your enemies on IM, as it were.
Anyway, I imagine you’re not the only one feeling like this, and if this effect will increase in the future, I imagine this means you’ll start socializing more and more with people who share your taste. Nothing wrong there. To each his own, I guess.
It’s great to see you back! Try blogging-as-diary rather than blog-as-essays, if time is in short supply.

Ahh, nothing like blowing off a little steam to relieve the stress.
The whole instant messenger thing caught me up for a couple of months once, but now I’m pretty much on a permanent boycott.
What’s wrong with the phone? You call someone up, chat for a bit and then say goodbye because the bill is growing too large, fear of wasting money limits the time you waist. The best bit is you now have more time to meet people in person!

The only redeeming feature is remote communication, that is different than the telephone. I can sincerely say I’m friends with people via chat that I have never met in person. Strange I know, but it’s cool. It also gives me the immediacy to maintain contact with people that I couldn’t spend the time and long distance phone bills to talk to otherwise. I completely agree it’s an addiction to not abuse, but used well —- not as a substitute for actual contact —- but a supplement, it’s pretty great.

Perhaps you didn’t read the instructions completely for Google Talk. Google Talk is amazing because it’s nothing more than a Jabber network with some custom voice extensions. You can use any Jabber compatible messaging application. For your Mac this would probably mean Tiger’s iChat or Audium. Google has stated they will publish their voice spec and include SIP protocol support upon release, which means you can even use a software phone to call an @gmail.com address.
The “where’s the mac support” complaint is lame. It’s 2005, platform dependence is so 1999. Proprietary IM is for children. Jabber + SIP is for grown ups and will change everything regardless if you’re “mac or PC”, not to mentions the millions of us who are neither.

Tom —- I completely agree. Of course iChat (or instant messaging in general) is not all bad. I have similar situations where I keep in touch with people I have actually never met; and that sort of stuff is great. However, it is less great when it encourages laziness and destroys communication on a local level.
Lee —- Your comment does not change my opinion about the application that Google released. I am sorry, but most of the interfaces coming from Google may be innovative, but the design still sucks. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. As for platform (in)dependence? Well, why is it only being released for Windows? Users interact with an interface, not a protocol.

I don’t believe Google cares about their application, which is fine because they care more about the protocol and supporting existing applications which already have good UI design. Releasing a Windows application is purely a marketing thing because that’s what Windows users expect. A small, custom application for every single thing rather than utilities and interfaces that speak to an underlying open protocol.
Open protocols do effect UI design on a more abstract level. They allow the UI design to be more generic, more mutable. You need not reinvent the wheel every time a new network protocol comes out, you just modify your UI a little.

DJ, I totally agree. I don’t like where it’s going either, but I find myself using various IM’s nonetheless. Then again, I use them for contacts I couldn’t talk to in a face-to-face manner most of the time, anyway… it’s great for that, but it’s become a habit to just talk over IM for people, regardless of geographical necessities.

the only thing i agree with you is that it destroys productivity. other than that the rest is nonsense. I maintain relationships with several people via ichat. people that live in various parts of the country, that I rarely see face to face, i now have daily conversations with. I even use the voice feature and talk to some people that way instead of typing. I “seduced” the girl that is now my girlfriend over iChat - she lived in a different city at the time. just like anything else thats been bemoaned throughout the ages it isnt the technology, its how you choose to use it.

I agree with you for the most part - people shouldn’t be chatting away without making physical connections. Personally, I don’t talk to anyone on AIM/iChat (or whatever client you’re using) that I don’t talk to in person also. For me, it’s just easier than calling someone, and its generally easier to get a hold of them.

i think you should post something about rss feeds next. i can’t imagine life without them but my attention span is now shot. i can’t even read long articles in “real” newspapers anymore cos i’m in constant “scan” mode..

1. Nothing wrong with Google Talk’s interface. It’s clean and minimal, just like everything else Google. I fully support its total lack of features, although it wont stay that way. Hopefully they never add emoticons or any of the other lame features that plague other IM clients. File transfer would be a welcome addition though.
2. iChat’s name sucks just as much as every other iSomething and eWhatever.
3. You give too much credit to iChat. It’s not all that much better than the hoards of other IM clients that have been around for years.

You’re getting old. You are moralizing mass technology and people using it, just like your aunt Emma did, when you watched MTV 10 hours a day, listend to Depeche on your walkman over night, played C64 with those red eyes.
You should rather check out what kind of antennas these messenger kids are buliding out. Two sentences and they know who you are (male, over 30, elitary fuck). I am amazed with the psycholinguistic psychological and psychosocial and psychotrallala talents these kids develop. I really do.

I have to agree (belatedly) with the poster before me, IM doesn’t destroy human contact at all. The same thing was said when the Walkman came out, everyone who had one were removing themselves from the human experience blah blah blah, 20 years on we have whole social subcultures built around the iPod.
You are right about IM destroying productivity though, but I find email and phone calls do much the same thing when I really need some quiet to get things done. There is an obvious solution — turn them off!

I agree with most of what was said above, but part of it could be many hypocritical statements. I’m fairly certain at one time or another (probably more) all of you have been guilty of using a client like iChat or whichever you happen to use simply because you didn’t want to get up. For one, I know I am completely guilty of it. Though, that could just be me, but I am willing to put money on the fact that it is not.
iChat (Though in my town and sorrounding area it is AIM) has created bridges between people who would normally not be talking in the first place (often times a different social class) but at the same time gives off a different personality type that you wouldn’t see in the real world, meaning that when the two or more people chatting finally do meet in the real world, their ideas of eachother are askew. This is largely due to what you had said earlier, people are willing to say things on chat clients that they would not say otherwise, and are much more likely to misinterpret something somebody says.
Are chat clients good? No. Will people still use them because they are easier? Yes. These are just two unavoidable facts that most of the people using these clients don’t even realize, and so it is good to see that there is at least a few people (We may lurk in the minority on these radical ideas) that have realized how destructive these clients can be.

It’s interesting you chose iChat, of all IM clients to pick on. I agree with most of your pejorative points made against it. However, Apple is—more than any other company or IM—developing ways to increase human interaction by placing a strong emphasis on voice and video chat. IM clients are tools, like all any other device. Tools can be used to incur negative or positive results. If anything, it seems more a human problem of how to use these tools rather than the tools themselves.

all said by someone writing down all his thoughts on the internet… how tradtitional. Im clients enhance comunication, if someone chooses to limit their comunication to an IM client, they don’t deserve the effort it takes to actually meet up with friends.

I believe there’s an interoffice romance going on and it’s being fed via iChat. I’m on the same corporate scale as the male member involved. We are both superiors to the woman involved. I can’t go changing their local prefs without them catching on. I wish there were a sneaky way to monitor from my station. Or at least change their local prefs (save iChat logs) from my remote location. Any thoughts?
