Music and Memory
Marcos Weskamp and I are currently working on a project that links music and memory, at Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. At this point we are collecting data to populate the database that will be used for the visualization.
In a form we have put online we ask you to mention a specific song that you relate to a memory. Do you have a specific song that reminds you of your first girlfriend; that cool wedding of your best friend; a summer vacation? We are sure that you can find plenty examples! You can even sketch out your memory, among other things! It's great fun, really!

Your help is greatly appreciated, thank you! Feel free to send this form to other people too! Oh, yeah, and we would like to collect the data pretty soon, actually within the next 2 or 3 days.
note:
Your privacy will be protected, obviously, all the data used is collected anonymously and used for internal academic purposes (not sold to others etc.) As you can see we do not ask for a username or email or any personal information. We are interested in the stories, and how music relates to memory.

Very interesting project. This is something that I’ve always been interested in. I’ve filled out one memory, and will probably come back and fill out some more.
Will you be publishing the results publicly?

I’ve been trying to fill out the form, but when I hit my backspace key to fix a typo, it takes me back to this page. i’ve been trying my best to type it correctly without hitting backspace - but it’s just a habit i can’t break.
not complaining - just wanted to give you a heads up. :)
but the idea seems it could be cool. :)

Nice project there. Just when I read what it was about, a very intense memory of a song came to me, so I posted it straight there. ‘3am eternal’ by the KLF .. do you remember the 90’s?

I *would*, but I’m unsure about privacy issues. What are the policies of the Nundroo International Corporation Ltd. Inc. GhB. S.R.L.? ;-)

I had recently been thinking about this, but more of a music connected to books kind of thing. I filled one memory out, by the way.

If you move the pen fast, you end up with more ink. If you move it slow, you get less ink. After youve finished your ink, you can click on the pad and get some lines from the bottom right corner. Thats a super slick form!!!

Hi Didier, I’ve filled in the form. If you come across a Belgian memory back in the Summer of 1979 this could be mine ;-) …1979 were is the time…boy I’m old!

I have contributed to the survey. Where can we read the result once you’ve analyzed it?

I’ve developed a flash interface project which depended heavily on user input. It has failed so far because there’s no comunity of users to participate in it. That’s my fault. It just makes me think that you are lucky you’ve already built a comunity of readers around your blog, and how your blog can be considered as an integral part of your music database project, strategy-wise. There so much potential for fun visualizations in the “blogosphere” (the “Friend of a Friend” project comes to mind). Sounds interesting!

I am sixty, I play piano, organ, guitar and accordion. Since my fifteen, I played these instrument in the church. When I sing or hum any song played long time ago, I can remember all scene related to this song. I remember several details-people, place, decoration, etc.-, that without the music I believ I couldn’t remember. Consequently, I think the music stimulate my memory. It is only my experience. what you need to do is get everyone in a scanner while you ask these questions….planum temporale on the right side…a little hippocampus, anterior cingulate, posterior parietal..? hmmm..even better…a functional scan…to see these areas light up in which sequence during recall.
yes.

this a really great idea! i’m writing my thesis about the effect of music on the emotions, and of course the memories music can bring to people’s minds, play a very important role. i wrote down 1 memory, but i’ll definitely add more, cos i always want to help those who’re also interested in music+memory or emotions!! ciao, L
